Package an AI Video Edit So Another Editor Can Continue It

A final MP4 shows the result but does not explain how to revise it. Prepare an editable package with the accepted source clips, project dependencies and concise generation context, while sharing only material the recipient is authorised to receive.

Accepted media → Editable dependencies → Continuation notes

Original explanatory diagram. Examples illustrate a method or decision; they are not claims of personal testing.

Define what the next editor needs to change

Ask what continuation means for this project. Changing a date in a title layer is different from generating a new camera angle or translating the narration. List the expected revisions and the software environment. This determines which editable assets, source media and notes need to travel with the project.

For an illustrative campaign handoff, the recipient may need to change approved text and export a vertical variant, while the generated hero shot remains fixed. That package should preserve text layers and the full accepted clip. It does not necessarily need every rejected experiment. Avoid sending a huge archive that hides the useful production state.

Collect the actual project dependencies

Use the editor supported collection or project-management tools where available. Adobe Premiere documents collecting selected sequence media into a new location. Check what the chosen tool includes and what still needs separate treatment, such as fonts, linked compositions, plugins or external assets. A copied project file alone may still reference media on your own computer.

Keep the original project intact while making the handoff copy. Open the copied project from its new location and check for missing media. Test a short export if the agreed workflow requires it. Do not claim the package is portable merely because the folder contains many files; the important evidence is that the intended edit opens with the necessary dependencies.

Include generation context without exposing accounts

Record the accepted clip identifiers, model or service, generation date, relevant settings and the references used. Include the prompt where it is useful and permitted, but explain that repeating it may not reproduce the same output exactly. A generation log supports understanding; it is not a deterministic recipe for every model.

Never include passwords, access tokens or private account cookies in the package. If the recipient needs a service project, use the supported sharing arrangement and appropriate permissions. Check that reference assets and generated outputs may be shared for this purpose. Client or third-party material should not be forwarded merely because it was convenient during experimentation.

Explain the edit decisions and limits

Provide a short readme with the main sequence, approved version, export settings, text sources and unresolved issues. Note which visuals are illustrative and which were checked against factual references. Identify any disclosure or provenance requirements that matter at publication. Another editor should not have to infer these decisions from filenames.

An illustrative note might say that shot two is approved only as a fictional background, that the product image must remain the supplied still and that the final title is editable. Keep these instructions concrete. Avoid a vague statement that everything is cleared when some licences or specialist approvals remain outside your role.

Validate the package from the recipient perspective

Use a clean folder structure and clear version names. Include the final reference export so the recipient can compare the opened project against the intended result. Check audio, text timing and aspect ratio in the handoff copy. Tell the recipient which software version and optional components were used.

Ask for confirmation that the package opens if that is part of the handoff agreement, and resolve missing dependencies through a controlled update. Keep the delivery record and access permissions aligned with the project. An editable package should make a known revision possible; it should not promise indefinite compatibility with every future editor version or recreate service features that are no longer available.

Questions that come up

Is the final MP4 an editable project?

It can be edited as a rendered clip, but it does not preserve the original layers, timing decisions and dependencies needed for many revisions.

Should I include every rejected generation?

Only when it has a defined purpose and sharing is authorised. Keep accepted production media easy to identify.

Will the same prompt reproduce the exact shot?

Do not promise that. Preserve the accepted source clip and document the generation context as supporting information.
